For the 15 years I’ve owned and operated a dental consumable supply company, I’ve spent countless hours on the phones with dentists and office managers, answering questions about price, lead times, and product quality. More recently, though, the conversation has shifted entirely: now, half the calls I get start with, “I need to know how our supplies are affecting the planet, and what we can do better.” Dental Consumable

This is not a surprise. Dental care is a multibillion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, and most of the products that flow through its offices are designed for single use. Think about it: a new pair of nitrile gloves for every patient, a new disposable suction tip for every treatment, a new barrier sleeve for every X-ray machine. The average dental office generates roughly 500 pounds of waste per provider each year, and up to 75% of that is classified as hazardous or regulated medical waste, according to a 2022 study published in the Journal of Environmental Management. That number doesn’t include the millions of pounds of plastic packaging, office paper, and non-regulated single-use items that end up in regular landfills every year.

As a supplier, I’ve always focused on delivering products that work for dental teams—sterile, reliable, easy to stock. But in recent years, I’ve had to learn to balance that with a new set of priorities: the environmental impact of what we move from our warehouse to their offices. It’s not just about the waste that gets left behind after a patient leaves. It’s the hidden impact: the fossil fuels used to make the plastic in a disposable impression tray, the energy required to sterilize and transport products, the emissions from incinerating regulated waste, and the way even small, everyday choices add up to a large environmental footprint.

Let’s start with single-use plastics, the backbone of most dental consumables. A typical dental office might go through 10,000 nitrile gloves a month; each glove is made from butadiene, a petroleum-based product. A 2021 report from the American Dental Association (ADA) estimated that U.S. dentists use roughly 3.5 billion single-use gloves annually, all of which end up either in landfills or as medical waste. Unlike many consumer plastics, most dental single-use items are not recyclable. Gloves are small, contaminated with bodily fluids, and too thin to process through standard recycling lines. Impression trays, suction tips, and even the plastic liners for sterilized instruments face the same barrier: cross-contamination makes them too risky for most recycling facilities to accept.

Regulated dental waste adds another layer of complexity. Many single-use items—gloves, needles, suction tips, and even some restorative materials—are classified as biohazardous or infectious waste. In most U.S. states, this waste can’t go to a regular landfill; it has to be incinerated. Incineration releases a range of pollutants, including dioxins, furans, and carbon dioxide, all of which contribute to air quality issues, especially in communities located near dental clinics and incineration facilities. A 2023 study from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that medical waste incinerators are a major source of persistent organic pollutants in urban areas, and dental waste is a growing contributor to that stream.

Even beyond end-of-life disposal, the production and transport of dental consumables leave a footprint. Most of the nitrile gloves we supply are made in factories in Southeast Asia, where manufacturing processes are often energy-intensive and rely heavily on coal power. Each shipment of gloves crosses the Pacific, adding to fuel emissions from shipping and freight. Add to that the plastic packaging that wraps every box of gloves, every tray, every pouch—most of which is thrown away by the office before the product even enters the supply closet—and the cycle of waste starts long before a product reaches a patient.

But here’s the thing: it’s not all doom and numbers. Over the last five years, I’ve watched dentists, manufacturers, and suppliers like myself start to shift away from the “single-use-only” mindset that dominated dental care for decades. I’ve invested hours in vetting new products, working with factories that use more sustainable materials, and educating my clients about small changes that can make a big difference. Let’s talk about some of the solutions that are already making an impact, and how they’re changing the way we do business.

First, there’s the rise of sustainable materials for dental consumables. In the last three years, we’ve added a line of gloves made from biodegradable nitrile, a material that breaks down in industrial composting facilities in about two years, compared to hundreds of years for standard nitrile. We also carry disposable bibs made from a blend of recycled paper and plant-based plastic, which is thinner than traditional bibs but still durable enough to stand up to dental procedures. One of our most popular new products is a line of sterilized reusable impression trays, made from medical-grade stainless steel that can be autoclaved hundreds of times, cutting down on the need for single-use plastic trays entirely. I worked with a small manufacturer last year to test these trays, and the feedback from dentists has been incredible—they save offices hundreds of dollars a year, and reduce waste by thousands of pounds annually.

Then there’s the push for reducing packaging waste. A few years ago, I noticed that many of the products we supplied came in excess plastic wrapping: every box of gloves was sealed in a thick plastic bag, every pouch of sterilized instruments was wrapped in two layers of plastic. We worked with our manufacturers to cut that down, and now most of our products come in minimal, recyclable packaging. We also started offering bulk orders for offices that use large quantities of gloves and bibs, reducing the number of individual boxes and shipments that have to be transported. It’s a small change, but a single bulk order of 5,000 gloves replaces 10 smaller boxes, each with its own packaging and shipping weight.

Another area where we’ve had an impact is in helping offices manage their waste more responsibly. I don’t just sell products anymore; I work with the dental offices that buy from me to create waste reduction plans. We share resources about where to recycle non-contaminated items, how to separate regulated waste from regular trash, and which products generate the least waste. Last year, a pediatric dental clinic in Chicago worked with us to switch to reusable trays and biodegradable bibs, and cut their annual waste output by 40%—all without increasing their costs, or compromising on the quality of care their young patients received.

Of course, there are challenges. Many sustainable products are still more expensive than their traditional counterparts, and small dental offices with tight budgets can’t always absorb the cost difference. There’s also a lack of infrastructure for recycling medical waste in many parts of the country, making it hard for dentists to properly dispose of even the items they want to recycle. I’ve spent a lot of time advocating for better waste management systems, both with local governments and with the ADA, because I know that change can’t happen if the tools and support aren’t there.

What’s most exciting, though, is the shift in mindset. When I first started in this industry, most dentists didn’t ask about the environmental impact of their supplies. Now, they’re asking which products are recyclable, which are made from sustainable materials, and how they can do their part to reduce their footprint. It’s not just about doing the right thing for the planet; it’s about meeting the expectations of their patients, many of whom ask about sustainability when choosing a provider. A 2022 survey by the ADA found that 68% of dental patients say they would choose a practice that prioritizes eco-friendly practices over one that doesn’t, and that number is only going up.

For me, that means my job isn’t just about moving supplies from a warehouse to an office. It’s about being a partner to my clients, someone who understands both their need for high-quality products and their need to be responsible. I spend a lot of time testing new products, talking to manufacturers about their environmental practices, and sharing what I learn with the offices that rely on me. Last month, I hosted a free webinar for local dentists about sustainable dental consumables, and more than 80 people attended. We talked about everything from switching to reusable trays to reducing packaging waste, and by the end, everyone had at least one idea they could implement in their practice the next week.

The environmental impact of dental consumables is a real issue, and it’s one that’s only going to grow as the dental industry expands. But it’s also an opportunity. Every time a dentist chooses a biodegradable glove over a standard one, a reusable tray over a single-use one, or a product with minimal packaging, they’re making a difference. And as a supplier, I’m here to help them make those choices.

If you’re a dental practice manager or owner who’s looking to learn more about how your consumables are impacting the environment, or who’s ready to make a switch to more sustainable products, I’d welcome the chance to talk. I’ve spent 15 years in this industry, and I know firsthand that small changes add up to big results. Let’s work together to find solutions that work for your practice and for the planet.

Dental Consumable References

Journal of Environmental Management.
